Emirates Flight Catering and Crop One Holdings, Inc. are to co-invest US$40 million in building a vertical farming facility near Al Maktoum International Airport.

Construction work on the facility is due to begin in November 2018 and is expected to be completed by December 2019. At its peak, Emirates Flight Catering say the vertical farm will be capable of producing 2,700kg of vegetables a day.

Emirates Flight Catering chief executive officer Saeed Mohammed said in a statement: “Introducing the latest technology to our operations, we secure our own supply chain of high quality and locally-sourced vegetables, while significantly reducing our environmental footprint.”

The facility will cover 130,000 square feet upon completion, while having a production output equivalent to farmland 300 times the size.
