With a clean sweep of first picks from the judges, Atlantis the Palm director of resort stewarding Derrick Menezes was crowned Chief Steward of the Year at the Caterer Middle East Awards 2019.
He received the award from Marija Cerauskaite- Head of Marketing and Communications at A&T interiors at the event at JW Marriot Marquis on June 18.
The judges were looking for a winner that showed exceptional organisation, effective team leadership and an ability to ensure all aspects of the kitchen and restaurant always meet a high level of cleanliness, and Menezes delivered on all counts.
Heading up a team of 150 full-time staff and 115 casual staff, Menezes looks after no less than 23 F&B outlets resort-wide at Atlantis.
His money saving exploits in this difficult economy impressed the judges significantly, while his passion for training and developing his team was also highly praised.
Upon receiving his award, Menezes was quick to praise his colleagues at Atlantis. He said: “Atlantis is like a family to me. You get mentored by people who have been in the industry for several years. Sascha Triemer [VP of F&B at Atlantis] is my guide. He is a guy who will pat me on the back and when it’s required he will correct me. This award is a reward for my work and keeps me motivated to do even better.”
