A recently launched food delivery app has joined the fast-growing movement against high commissions from food aggregators by waiving its commission for restaurants in Dubai.
FoodKarma, which aims to increase sustainability by selling dishes which would otherwise be wasted, said it wanted to do its bit to support local businesses.
In a statement released on social media, founder Eugenie Dronneau said: “In difficult times like these, it’s more important than ever that we do our bit to help others in our community and industry. That’s why FoodKarma is dedicated to helping restaurants, cafes, outlets, and vendors survive and remain open during and after the global Covid-19 pandemic.”
Encouraging more restaurants to sign up with the FoodKarma app, Dronneau said she hoped it would prevent job losses and “promote sustainable and ethical food production, distribution, and supply”.
It comes as prominent food writers FooDiva and Food Sheikh have both called upon delivery platforms to reduce their commission, with restaurants only able to serve customers through delivery because of the coronavirus outbreak.
